你是否注意到,Merry Christmas 经常被简写为Merry Xmas?

Christmas=Xmas,这是为什么呢?

有人说,这是要让圣诞节世俗化,去除当中的“Christ”(基督)以及与之相关的基督教传统和意义。

但这个说法站不住脚。

因为Xmas不是现代才有的拼法,早在公元1100年, X就一直被用来代表 Christ,比如当时 Christianity (基督教)就写成 Xianity ,后又进一步缩略为 Xnty 。

况且,Christmas中除了Christ,mas也大有宗教意味。

Christmas其实是 Christ ’ s Mass (基督的弥撒)的缩写。

其中,Christ来自 Jesus Christ(耶稣基督),Christ并不是Jesus的姓氏,而是基督教对耶稣的专称(或者说头衔),意指上帝所差遣的救世主,原本叫Jesus the Christ,后来简称Jesus Christ。

而Mass也是一个宗教术语,指天主教的圣体圣事仪式,汉语一般译为“弥撒”。(天主教是基督教的一个分支)

把Christmas缩写成Xmas,其实是因为圣经《新约》最初是用希腊语写成的,而Christ在古希腊语中原本就写作Χριστός ,首字母chi写法和英语字母表中的X相似。

同时,一些人也认为 X正好象征十字架。

换句话说,Xmas的写法最初就有宗教寓意,X和mas(由Mass简化而来)本身都是宗教意味很强的符号。

现代人英语用Xmas 替代Christmas,大多还是因为写推文等有字符限制,写圣诞贺卡或报纸大字标题等需要节省篇幅而已,这些额外加强人们使用 Xmas 的动机。

不可否认的是,Christ和X的在发音上也有一定的相似性,这也符合现代人简写的原则,比如以前我们见过的“XOXO”中X代表Kiss。

对了,Xmas可读作/'krisməs/,也可读作/'eksməs/。
